RELIGIOUS belief can cause damage to a society, contributing towards high murder rates, abortion, sexual promiscuity and suicide, according to research published today.
According to the study, belief in and worship of God are not only unnecessary for a healthy society but may actually contribute to social problems.
The study counters the view of believers that religion is necessary to provide the moral and ethical foundations of a healthy society.
This article is a few years old, but it isn't the first time I have heard this. Basically what it boils down to is that religious societies have a higher crime rate than secular ones. I've known for a while that US Prison populations have an interesting disparity between believers and non-believers, basically Atheists and Agnostics comprise less than 1% of the prison population. Now if there is more recent data that disputes this, I would love to see it. The only anomaly I have seen recently is Malaysia, a primarily Muslim nation. I guess if you think you only have one life to live, then you are more likely to consider the consequences of your actions. So much for non believers being "immoral" when the evidence points to the contrary.
